CHLG's Hybrid Academy
Capitol Hill Learning Group is excited about our new addition- the CHLG Hybrid Academy. The Hybrid Academy is a unique schooling opportunity that combines the best of traditional schooling with the very best of homeschooling. Our Hybrid model consists of teacher led classes three mornings a week as well as regularly assigned work for the child to complete at home with his/her parent(s). Hybrid modeled schools are growing in popularity because they provide parents with greater opportunities to be integrally involved in their child's education as well as allowing for more family time during the week. Additionally, the pairing of classroom work with one on one work at home allows for a program that can be tailored to the individual child's academic strengths and weaknesses.
Families involved in the Hybrid Academy have the option of attending field trips with other families in the program a few times per month (and siblings may attend these trips as well). Families take turns planning the trips (which are held on a Monday or a Wednesday, since the students don't have class on those two days). Field trips may directly relate to current studies or may simply be interesting, educational opportunities that would peak the interests of the students. In addition to field trip opportunities, weekly physical education classes (including gymnastics instruction and swim lessons) are set up by the director of the program. Families chose whether or not they would like to participate in these P.E. classes, and younger siblings can sometimes join in on these opportunities as well.
CHLG's Hybrid Academy is faith based in the Christian tradition and meets on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings beginning at 9:00am and ending at 12:45pm. We meet, along with our preschool classes, at 433 9th Street NE. For 2012-2013 we will offer classes for Kindergarten and First Grade (and our hope is to add a grade level each year). Our class sizes are typically between 8-10 students (10 students is the maximum) and we use an eclectic approach that includes elements of both the Classical and Charlotte Mason methods. Tuition for 2012-2013 is $3500 annually ($350/month) for Kindergarten and $4000 annually ($400/month) for First Grade.
CHLG has a cooperative element, and families participating in the Hybrid Academy are scheduled to work as the teacher's assistant in the classroom approximately five mornings during the course of the school year. Families are also expected to volunteer in other capacities, and this helps to keep tuition costs down and encourage learning in community. See the FAQ tab on the homepage for more information regarding the volunteer expectations for participating families.
Numerous studies published over the past twenty years have indicated that parental involvement is a key element in a student's success in school, so we are encouraged as we anticipate the opportunities for growth that the Hybrid Academy will offer, both to students and to their families. We started with Kindergarten in 2011-2012, will add First Grade in 2012-2013, and hope to continue to add a grade level each year.
You can read more of my thoughts about CHLG's Hybrid Academy under the Q & A section. Additionally, consider visiting the Oak Tree Academy website (link is below). Oak Tree Academy is a school in Virginia Beach that is operating with this Hybrid Model (although they refer to it as a "University Model"). They have a nice, informative video on their home page that will give you a good sense of how the model works.

If you have interest in such an option for Kindergarten for the remainder of 2011-2012 (or for future years) would you let me know via the contact tab? I would love to talk to you more about our program and offer you an opportunity to come for a school visit.
Blessings!
