Capitol Hill Learning Group (CHLG) was founded in 2006 by two Hill moms who were interested in creating an environment of learning for their children. CHLG has morphed and changed over the years, but the 2011-2012 school year marks our biggest change yet. In addition to our licensed parent/teacher cooperative preschool we now also offer CHLG Hybrid Academy (which currently serves Kindergarteners and which will expand to include First Grade in 2012-2013). You can read more about the new Hybrid Academy under the "classes" tab.
We offer teacher-led classes for children 2.5 to 6 years of age and parent/child playgroups for children 14 months to 2.5 years. CHLG has seven paid staff members (a director, who teaches weekly music classes and handles most of the administrative aspects of the school, and six classroom teachers). Parents contribute by assisting in their child's classroom on a rotating basis and by volunteering in other capacities to help keep the school running smoothly. It's a great way to be involved in your child's early social and educational interactions and to get to know other families in the community.
CHLG is faith-based in the Christian tradition. While we are organized in such a way that there is freedom to talk about God, Jesus Christ and the Bible, we welcome families from other faiths as well as families who do not consider themselves religious. Though our group is not a fit for everyone (and we certainly respect the choice not to participate with us) we are proud of the fact that we have had great support from the community-at-large and continue to have a diverse group of families participating with us. If you have questions about the faith-based aspect of the school please see our FAQ tab.
At CHLG our goal is to allow children to be children while helping them become individuals who understand that they are made in God's image to care for and about others and to use their gifts and talents to serve God and others. We seek to provide a developmentally appropriate program that engages children's minds, encourages their creativity, guides their choices, nurtures their strengths and graciously addresses their unique challenges. We desire that God's love be at the forefront of all that we say and do, and with His help we seek to minister emotionally, physically, and spiritually, both to the children in our care and their families.
As you know, your children are open and full of wonder. They are curious about the world and anxious to learn. It's important to us to provide a learning environment where children can feel confident about themselves, and one of the ways we do this is by keeping our class sizes small. Our maximum class size is 10 children, which means more individualized attention for each child.
CHLG's preschool program provides curriculum for all areas of a child's growth- physical, emotional, spiritual, social, linguistic, aesthetic and cognitive. We focus on what is familiar to children and on creative play through which children learn social roles, cooperation and problem solving. Children learn through experimenting, observing, wondering, exploring and questioning. Our curriculum seeks to provide children with the skills that will both help them learn as well as develop a love for learning. We promote children's inner drive and excitement about learning as they use and apply knowledge, process and skills.
Our preschool classrooms are well stocked with train tables, building blocks, manipulatives, games and puzzles, kitchen toys, dolls and accessories, puppets, and a reading area. Our Hybrid Academy classrooms includes plenty of math manipulatives, tools for science exploration, and a separate library space. In addition to our classrooms we also have a large indoor play area that we call the "Discovery Room" that is equipped with a sensory table, an art area for exploring various mediums, a climbing structure and slide, a castle structure, a kitchen/home play area, dress up clothes, bouncy balls, ride-on toys and climb through tunnels.
When the weather permits each preschool class spends daily time outside, either at Lovejoy Playground (just a few blocks away), or, for the older classes, Stanton Park. The classes also take nature walks or engage in gross motor activities in our outdoor patio area. During inclement weather the children can spend time in a large room off of the "Discovery Room" where we set up obstacle courses, play with the parachute, ride the ride on toys and engage in circle games.
In addition to our teacher-led classes we also have two playgroups for younger children (aged 14 months through 2 1/2 years). These groups are designed for a parent to attend with the child for a time of free play and social interaction. Use of two classrooms, the recess room and craft materials is included and encouraged! It's a fun space for kids, a great place to meet other families and a weekly opportunity for your child to gain greater social skills.
Classes meet one, two, and three days a week from 9-12:45. Because of the space Washington Community Fellowship has shared with us (433 9th St, NE), we have been able to create a program that meets the needs of parents in our community with children ranging from fourteen months through seven years of age. Please peruse the rest of our site for more information about class offerings, tuition, and the application process.
Warmly,
